Housing First, Inc.’s Homelessness Prevention Department (H.P.D) is charged with aiding individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness or a housing crisis. Three federal grants are utilized by the H.P.D. team to carry out their charge, the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Grant and the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) and Continuum of Care Program (CoC).
The SSVF program is exclusively for veterans and their families who are either literally homeless or are at immanent risk of losing their housing. The Veteran’s income must not exceed 50% of the area’s Average Monthly Income (AMI). In addition to the aforementioned income requirement, the Veteran must have an acceptable discharge status.
The ESG program provides short-term and medium-term assistance to rapidly re-house the literally homeless and prevent homelessness when possible. The ESG program is funded by grants through Mobile County, the City of Mobile, and the State of Alabama Department of Economic and Community Development (ADECA). Each division carries its own eligibility criteria and service team.
The CoC Program funds Family Solutions Project (FSP). The FSP is designed to assist literally homeless families with minor children to rapidly obtain stable permanent housing by providing income-based rental assistance.
